The Old Man of Coniston, scene of the rescue

A walker was airlifted to hospital after injuring himself today on a Lakeland fell.

The man was descending from the summit of the Old Man of Coniston when he slipped and injured his leg.

Coniston Mountain Rescue Team was alerted at 11.35am and 11 members went to the walker’s aid on the 803m (2,635ft) peak.

Jeff Carroll of Coniston MRT said: “The man was treated at the scene for a suspected broken ankle by team members and a paramedic from the North West Air Ambulance before being stretchered off the mountain.”

He was then flown to Furness General Hospital in Barrow-in-Furness by the air ambulance.
