Police have named a paddler who died on the River Roy on Friday.

Steven Pullinger, a 49-year-old from Tunbridge Wells in Kent, was trapped when his canoe capsized and became wedged in rocks. Mr Pullinger was with a party of 12 on the swollen Lochaber river.

He was unable to free himself and his friends eventually got him to the river bank. Scottish Ambulance Service staff and Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team attended but despite treatment he was pronounced dead.

Inspector Douglas Allan of Lochaber police said: "The river was a thundering torrent and there is an incredible force in it. It was not surprising that he couldn't right himself."
