Steve Perry, the man who last winter conquered all Scotland’s 284 Munros in one, non-stop trip, is taking on a new challenge next year.

The 35-year-old engineer from Todmorden, West Yorkshire, will lead a team tackling Africa’s highest three peaks. Money raised from the venture will go to Comic Relief.

Steve, whose non-motorised, winter ascent of Scotland’s 3,000-footers was a record breaker and involved 1,500 miles of walking, dreamt up the idea of 3PeaksAfrica. He will be joined on the expedition by Dan Bailey of Fife, Lorraine McCall of Edinburgh and fellow Todmorden hillwalker Andrew Wilkinson. Both Steve and Andrew are members of the Phantom Mountaineering Club.

The 3PeaksAfrica challenge will start with an ascent of Margherita, a 5,109m peak in Uganda, followed by the more technical climb of the Batian peak on Mount Kenya, 5,199m high, and finish with a slog up Kilimanjaro, the 5,895m king of the African tops in Tanzania.

The team hopes to complete the trip in three weeks in February 2007.
