The Scafell range seen from Bowfell

According to the Lake District National Park Authority, they’ve received a less than generous £1.96 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, though grough suspects they may be understating the amount.

Now the park authority wants volunteers to tackle the task of repairing the damage done to the district’s upland paths by the ten million walkers who visit the park each year. Volunteer co-ordinator Tim Duckmanton said: “Experience isn’t essential, because we will be giving full and diverse training, from path repair work to first aid, upland heritage to working with the public.

“As well as doing a vital job, our volunteers will learn new skills and meet new people.

“We are recruiting now and would like to hear from anyone willing to work in stunning locations and make a major contribution to safeguard some of the finest fell paths in the national park.”
