Police investigating the death of a schoolgirl during training for the Ten Tors event on Dartmoor say there is no evidence of criminal behaviour or negligence.

The funeral of Charlotte Shaw, 14, took place today, attended by many of her school mates, including team members who were with her, from the private Edgehill College, Bideford. Her mother Jennifer, family and staff from the school were among hundreds at the service at Bideford’s Methodist Church.

An inquest heard evidence that Charlotte dropped some equipment into Walla Brook on 4 March. She fell into the stream, which was in spate, when she leaned over to try to retrieve her gear.

26 other people from three schools were subsequently airlifted from the moor in severe weather conditions during the practice for the annual event, which is run by the Army.

The school’s chaplain, Pastor Dave Wilton, said Charlotte had set a fantastic example. Her uncle Jason Shaw told the congregation: “We want to celebrate her life today, not just mourn her death.”

She was, he said: “an energetic, talented, fun-loving smiling character.” He told mourners:  “Bury your sadness and make space for the happiness Charlotte brought.”

Organisers of the Ten Tors, which has run since 1960, say the event will go ahead next month.
