A charity is hoping to put walkers on the top of every 3,000ft mountain in the British Isles this summer.

WaterAid hopes to get a sponsored team on every one of the 303 peaks topping the magic 3,000ft mark on a date in June.

The charity aims to raise cash to help the world’s poorest people get a supply of clean water and in doing so break the record for having someone simultaneously on each of the peaks in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

The misleadingly named Munro Challenge includes all of Scotland’s 284 mountains of 3,000ft plus eight in north Wales, seven in the Irish Republic and four in the Lake District. The aim is to get a team, which must consist of between four and six members, on every summit between the hours of noon and 2pm on 9 June.

The charity attempted to break the record two years ago, but was thwarted when it learned that one team had failed to make its Munro.

Each team has to register and choose its peak, with a maximum of two teams per mountain. Each team member is expected to raise at least £50 for WaterAid. Details of the event are on the WaterAid website.
