He had last been seen shopping in Ambleside on 22 November. Farmer Tony Temple discovered his remains lying encased in two inches of ice in a water-filled hollow on the fells near his farm at Black Hall, Seathwaite, in the Duddon Valley.

Mr Temple was bringing his sheep from Moasdale, in the shadow of Crinkle Crags, to his farm near the Hardknott Pass, when he discovered the body. The man was wearing a rucksack and had a copy of one of Wainwright’s pictorial guides. He was about 400m from the nearest track.

Mr Dalgleish, 66, of Longley Road, Harrow in Middlesex, was a keen fellwalker. Police launched a full-scale search for the man after he failed to return to his lodgings in Ambleside.

North and West Cumbria Coroner John Taylor opened and adjourned an inquest into Mr Dalgleish’s death.
