The bodies of two walkers have been found, one in the Lake District and one in Perthshire.

Cumbria Constabulary confirmed yesterday evening that the body found on Skiddaw had been formally identified as Roy Sinfield, who came from the Preston, Lancashire, area.

And Tayside Police said that rescue teams had discovered the body of a woman in Kindrogan Wood, Kirkmichael, north of Blairgowrie. Mountain rescue teams, RAF search team members and police officers had called off the search on Friday, but the resumed operation resulted in the discovery of a woman’s body.

A 48-year-old Edinburgh failed to return to accommodation in Kirkmichael on Friday, after going for a walk on the wooded slopes of the 495m (1,624ft) Kindrogan Hill, 5km (3 miles) from the village. Lying snow and falling sleet hampered the search.

A body was found at 2.30pm yesterday.

A walker on 931m (3,055ft) Skiddaw found the walker's remains at about 11.15 yesterday morning. A police spokesman said the body has been recovered by Keswick Mountain Rescue Team. Further searches for Mr Sinfield were called off and his identity was confirmed some hours later.

The man, in his late sixties, had been reported missing after he failed to return to his Bowness holiday home, having left to go walking about 7am on Friday. Police had issued an appeal for information on his whereabouts.

Mountain-top weather assessor Craig Palmer warned walkers not to head for the fell-tops until conditions had improved, describing conditions as ‘lethal underfoot’ and as bad as he had seen for 16 years.

• Update, 6 January: Tayside police confirmed late last night that the body found in Kindrogan Wood, Kirkmichael, Perthshire, was that of 48-year-old Rachel Sherratt.
