A climber found at the foot of a buttress on Ben Nevis has died in hospital.

David Carney was found near the CIC hut under the mountain’s north face on Friday. The 37-year-old engineer, from Churwell, Leeds, was rescued by members of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team and an RAF helicopter and taken to Belford Hospital, Fort William.

He was transferred to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow, where he died on Sunday night from his injuries.

A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal in Fort William.
