A canoeist who died after being trapped on a weir in a Yorkshire river was named as Mark Watson.

The 37-year-old hospital worker from Swillington, Leeds, was pulled from the River Calder at Luddendenfoot near Halifax, but died in Calderdale Royal Hospital.

Mr Watson and three others were using inflatable canoes when they got into trouble in the turbulent water around the weir. More than 30 firefighters from across West Yorkshire were involved in the rescue.

A worker from a nearby company who jumped into the river to try to help had himself to be rescued by the fire service. The survivors are expected to make a full recovery.
