The wreckage of a missing light aircraft was found today on Cairn Gorm.

Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team discovered the wreckage about 1km (½ mile) from the mountain’s funicular railway. The body of a person was in the wreckage.

The plane went missing after it set off at about 9am yesterday from Carlisle. It is believed the Piper Saratoga had landed at Carlisle to refuel during a journey from Wolverhampton to Wick. Only the pilot was on board.

Three mountain rescue teams and two helicopters were involved in the search.

A report has been prepared for the procurator fiscal at Inverness.
