A British woman has died in a climbing accident in the Alps.
The 24-year-old, from Kent, fell near the peak of La Tour Ronde, in the Chamonix area of France. She was in a group of five climbers. A French climber also fell, sustaining leg injuries.
French police are investigating the incident. It is believed the pair slipped and the Kentish woman, as yet unnamed, fell about 300m (1,000ft). The Frenchman fell 185m (600ft).
The Foreign Office said the woman’s next of kin had been informed.
La Tour Ronde was the scene of a fatal accident in 1990 which saw mountain guide Dave ‘Smiler’ Cuthbertson found guilty of negligence in a case brought in 1997 by the son of Gerry Hedley, a climbing client. Cuthbertson was found to have been negligent by only placing one ice screw on a climb, which failed during a fall, plunging Mr Hedley to his death. Cuthbertson was injured in the incident.
