This year’s Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon will not be a boggy trudge, but a mountain journey, with munros and corbetts to conquer.

That’s the promise of the organisers of the event, dubbed the connoisseur’s mountain marathon. Martin Stone, in charge of the challenge, won’t say just how many peaks there are – ‘some anoraks would be able to work out the exact area' – if he did, he says. But it’s a three-hour drive north of Glasgow and two hours from Inverness.

There are still some places for the 7-8 June event, for all routes. The mountain marathon is a test of stamina, navigation and fitness, and involves a two-day course.

According to the organisers, the area has steep-sided glens, lochs, long bumpy ridges and plenty of hills. It will be generally rockier and rougher than last year’s course near Bridge of Orchy – but perhaps not as rough as Assynt, two years ago – although the terrain does vary across the area from more grassy and easier going to rocky scrambles.

Apart from the odd estate road, there will be few paths and even paths that are marked on the map will often not be very good or as well made as, say, the stalkers' paths in Assynt.

The centre of the area is very remote, with just a few bothies, and the area is, says the LAMM, rarely visited.
