A climber has died after he fell from the Cuillins on Skye.

He was airlifted by a helicopter from Stornoway Coastguard after his companion called emergency services at about 12.30pm yesterday. He was taken to Broadford Hospital, Skye, but pronounced dead.

The climber sustained serious head injuries after falling about 25m (80ft) in the Whispering Wall area of on Sgurr a Mhadaidh.

The climber is 35 and from Tayside, but his identity has not been released.

Rescuers from the Skye Mountain Rescue Team and the Northern Constabulary went to the man’s aid.

A report on the incident is being prepared by police.

  • A woman survived a 60m (200ft) fall from Striding Edge on Helvellyn. The 47-year-old, from Nottingham, suffered multiple injuries in the fall yesterday. A couple from Ellesmere Port, Merseyside, also fell from the same ridge.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team went to the aid of the three walkers.
