A man has died after falling 150m from a Lochaber ridge.
The unnamed 62-year-old died walker plunged from the Devil’s Ridge in the Ring of Steall at the head of Glen Nevis. The ridge lies between Sgùrr a’Mhàim and Sgùrr an Iubhair.
The emergency services received a call yesterday afternoon. 16 members of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team were mobilised, but the man was dead at the scene. A Royal Navy helicopter from HMS Gannet, Prestwick, took his body from the mountain.
MRT leader Terry Confield told the BBC: “The poor guy must have just lost his footing and slipped. He fell about 500ft and looks to have died instantly. It was just very unfortunate.”
Weather in the area was fine and conditions good. The ridge is an exposed arête leading to the 990m Stob Choire a’Mhail.
About 3pm the same day, the Lochaber team went to the aid of a woman who fell and injured her leg while descending Ben Nevis’s tourist track. The 65-year-old was airlifted by RAF helicopter to Belford Hospital, Fort William.
The team also went to the aid, just over two hours later, of a woman who became exhausted on the same track. She was accompanied from the mountain by the rescuers.
