The trail at Moel y Gaer

The Wat’s Dyke Heritage Trail follows the 99km (61-mile) route from Llanymynech near Welshpool to Greenfield, near Holywell, overlooking the Dee estuary. Welsh Assembly Government environment minister Jane Davidson opened the trail today at a ceremony near Wrexham.

A map of the routeThe route uses footpaths, bridleways and country lanes following the ancient earthworks, thought to be a defence against invaders from England, though much uncertainty remains as to its origins and even its age.

The Wat’s Dyke Way Association, formed in 2000, has been a key player in setting up the trail. Local members of the Ramblers’ Association also lent their support.

Walking enthusiast Pete Lewis has written a guide to the long-distance path. Details of the trail are on the Wat’s Dyke Heritage Trail website.
