Hafod Eryri in April this year

Bosses say bad weather has hampered construction of Hafod Eryri, as the building will be known. The official opening was planned for July this year.

According to the chief executive of the Snowdonia National Park Authority Aneurin Phillips, the structure of the building is complete and is just waiting for finishing touches, such as railings and landscaping. Scaffolding has been removed.

However, the cafe will not be opened to the public until repair and maintenance work on the Snowdon Mountain Railway is completed.

Hafod Eryri replaces the old cafe designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, described by the Prince of Wales as the country’s highest slum.

The name was chosen from more than 400 suggestions and is a combination of the Welsh for an upland farmstead and Eryri, the Welsh for Snowdonia.

So if you’re going up Wales’s highest mountain, pack your sandwiches for the time being.
