Building work on the new Snowdon summit cafe is now nine months behind schedule and the new mountain-top centre will not open until spring next year.
Hafod Eryri in April this year
Bosses say bad weather has hampered construction of Hafod Eryri, as the building will be known. The official opening was planned for July this year.
According to the chief executive of the Snowdonia National Park Authority Aneurin Phillips, the structure of the building is complete and is just waiting for finishing touches, such as railings and landscaping. Scaffolding has been removed.
However, the cafe will not be opened to the public until repair and maintenance work on the Snowdon Mountain Railway is completed.
Hafod Eryri replaces the old cafe designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, described by the Prince of Wales as the country’s highest slum.
The name was chosen from more than 400 suggestions and is a combination of the Welsh for an upland farmstead and Eryri, the Welsh for Snowdonia.
So if you’re going up Wales’s highest mountain, pack your sandwiches for the time being.

16 September 2008The removal of this hideous edifice would take no time at all and would be immeasurably cheaper. Perhaps this option could be considered.

05 April 2009Hello. Is there anyone there?

12 September 2009Has anyone here actually been up snowdon? after nearly a 3 hr walk the chance to use a real toilet after the home made sandwiches would be superb! i don't see what the problem is, yes the mountain is a beautiful place to be but thinking of the Welsh economy, this will do wonders because the people that wouldn't physically be able to walk to the summet now have the chance to gasp in it's beauty (and have a nice cup of tea!) so hail Mary for the summet cafe, if not just a toilet break and a warm drink, but to marvel through the hugh glass windows to the amazement that lies beneath.
