A Peak District rescue team was in action five times over the weekend.

The rescues, four of which were on Saturday, took Edale Mountain Rescue Team’s total callouts to the same level as the whole of last year. Three climbers needed the team’s services, along with a walker and a runner.

The first call to the volunteer team was about 11am on Saturday, when they were dispatched to help a walker who had fallen on Derwent Edge and sustained a bad cut to his head. He was escorted to the road by the rescuers after being treated.

The MRT was then alerted by the East Midlands Ambulance Service to a climber who injured himself in a fall at Stanage Edge, near Hathersage. Edale team members treated the man and then carried to him to a waiting air ambulance which airlifted him to hospital.

The same day, at 1pm, the team had to respond to two simultaneous calls for help, the first to another climber who had fallen about 15m (50ft) on Millstone Edge, injuring his head and back. He was airlifted to hospital for further treatment.

Team members also went to the aid of a runner who suffered a recurrence of an existing heart condition while on Baslow Edge. After being treated by Edale MRT members, he was taken by road ambulance to hospital in Chesterfield.

Finally, on Sunday, another climber needed help after falling on Froggat Edge and breaking his ankle. He was carried by stretcher to the top of the edge from where he was taken by ambulance to hospital in Chesterfield.

In common with many volunteer mountain rescuers, the Edale team has seen its workload increase this year, with a total of 85 callouts.
