Oversized Radio 1 motormouth Chris Moyles is among ‘celebrities’ who will tackle Africa’s highest mountain next year to raise cash for charity.
Moyles, renowned for his opinionated ramblings on the station’s breakfast show, will be accompanied by a team of B-list names to make money for Comic Relief. Take That member Gary Barlow has put together the group, which will tackle the 5,895m (19,340ft) extinct volcano in February 2009.
Accompanying Barlow and the Leeds DJ will be would-be Kili-conquerors Ronan Keating, Cheryl Cole, Kimberley Walsh, Denise Van Outen, Fearne Cotton, Alesha Dixon, Ben Shepherd and a Sun newspaper staff member.
The Tanzanian mountain and its Uhuru Peak form the highest point on the African continent. In recent years, it has been reported that Kilimanjaro risks losing its ice cap due to climate change. Summiteers on the mountain risk acute mountain sickness if they do not spend enough time acclimatising. Even then, many visitors on one of the mountain’s non-technical summit routes do not make it to the top because of altitude problems.
The Great Red Nose BT Kili Climb is part of the charity efforts, the main events of which take place on 13 March next year.

04 November 2008What planet are you living on? Gary Barlow is not 'former Take That'. Take That are very much a live and kicking force. Their 2009 Circus Tour is the fastest selling tour in the UK ever! Their album and single are about to go to number 1 in the UK, their second number 1 album since their comeback. Girls Aloud are probably the biggest girl-band in the UK at the moment and with regard to credibility - they kick the Spice Girls firmly into touch! Get with the picture Groughie - these are not 'B' list celebrities! Or are you a fan of UFO spotting, portly ex-Take That member?
Bob Smith
05 November 2008Our apologies for suggesting Gary Barlow is a 'former' Take That frontman. We've amended the headline
Penny Taylor
05 November 2008I suggest you amend the body of the copy as well as it still says former Take That member Gary Barlow. And I don't think any of the people you've mentioned are exactly B list. Where are you getting your information from?
Kath Peace
05 November 2008Why thank you Bob! You've still got the 'B' list wrong but I think us youthful Take That fans will forgive you this transgression as you're probably not well up on current affairs in the pop world! By the way - you've changed the header but you still have 'former' in the article. But in all I'd give it a C+ for effort but 'must do better next time'.
Laura
05 November 2008I've never seen such rubbish, honestly Gary Barlow B List ?????????
The guy along with the rest of TT have just sold 700,000 gig tickets in the UK, 200,000 more than Oasis. He is one of the ONLY stand alone song writers in the UK at the moment (look up stand alone in regard to songwriting!)
Take That in the last 18 months have broken every record going. B List they are not.
I suggest if your going to write a article do your research first.

05 November 2008The pop music A list is the likes of The Rolling Stones, U2, Queen, REM etc.
Therefore the list of people onthe kili trip can only be B list at best.
Catherine
05 November 2008Setting a new list for selling tour tickets in the UK is hardly B list is it? It makes me really mad seeing trash written like that.
Catherine
05 November 2008I meant a new record!! Not list.
Russell
05 November 2008Selling tickets in the UK, however fast, does not an A lister make.

05 November 2008Russell while I may agree with your comparison of The Beatles definitely and The Rolling Stones and Queen to a certain degree - your argument has a bit of a flaw when you include REM. REM have had to downsize gigs recently due 'less than anticipated' interest. Take That on the other are on their third sell-out tour - needing in many cases to add stadium after stadium. And not 'curtained-off' stadiums - the Full Monty as it were. So as much as I appreciate that REM are excellent musicians and at one time were 'A' List - then if Take That are 'B' List then REM have slipped a few leagues and are definitely 'C' List. I won't even bother mentioning Bono and the other fellas as I think they have been massively overrated for years.

06 November 2008While the author may well be an expert on the best hiking gear and how to bag a munro or six, he clearly has no concept of the world of show business.A little research is often a useful thing.
Russell
06 November 2008Kath, OK I'll give in to REM. As for U2, I prefer their early stuff and they may well be overrated now but still A list. I just picked a few bands that I consider A list.
My point is that A list are the international performers that have been around a while and achieved worldwide fame. Beatles, U2, Rolling Stones etc. I just don't put Take That in the same category.
I actually quite like Take That and think they are much better now.
I see that Grough still refers to them as B list in the article and if we are going to have such lists I don't disagree.
I also think what they are doing for Comic Releif is great and hope they succeed.
Dave
06 November 2008Well I say, it all sounds very definitely B list, you can tell by how defensive all the 'fans' are.
Mind,it's good to see a mountain issue getting so much reaction, just a shame it's about a bunch of B list celebs, and such a non story.
I know, it's for 'charidy smashie....'

06 November 2008Russell - looking on the funny side ... Kilimanjaro itself seems like a bit of a 'B' list of a mountain itself! It doesn't look much bigger than a mole-hill!
Russell
07 November 2008Kilimanjaro could be classed as a B list mountain. Despaite being the highest peak in Africa, and people still die of altitude sickness trying to climb it. Lets say the 8000m peaks are A list. Everything else is B, C, D etc.
That makes me a D list mountaineer at best. :-(

07 November 2008Russell - the highest thing I've been up is Mount Blue in Maine which I believe is just over 3,000 ft - a very enjoyable climb (actually it was a walk) but not very big I suppose - so I don't know why I'm insulting Kilimanjaro!

08 November 2008Ranking celebrities as A-list or otherwise is of course an entirely subjective activity as fame is often localised and this is an international website. Genuine attempts to quantify fame and rank celebrities, such as the Forbes Celebrity 100 make no mention of any of the aforementioned participants (Spice Girls, #50 by the way).
I'd say any research of which these gobby Take That fans speak of has been pretty well done. You can't maintain journalistic integrity by using statements like "Take That in the last 18 months have broken every record going." Which unlike the B-list comment, is simply untrue.
Personally, I'd rather these 'celebrities' gave up a fraction of their pay to charity as opposed being responsible for the atmospheric carbon dioxide contribution involved in flying these people out for a walk.
Kath Peace
17 November 2008Stewart - well apart from Gary taking part in this money-raiser - he and the rest of Take That donated a quarter of a million quid of their own money to the Children In Need appeal last Friday. So whether A, B, C, D or Z list - they're one of the nicest, most generous set of people who happen to be very I'm sure you'll agree. Or will you be one of those perpetual moaners who'll say 'Only a quarter of a million?'
I think I know the answer - its 'the moaner' isn't it?
