Catstye Cam in winter

Catstye Cam, right, in winter

A man had to be rescued from a Lake District Peak today after injuring his leg in a fall.

The 39-year-old, from Bristol, slipped while coming down from Catstye Cam in snowy conditions. 13 members of the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team went to the walker’s aid after being alerted by Cumbria Constabulary.

A spokesman for the team said: “While the slip in itself was not serious, the man unfortunately slid into an old metal stake and sustained a severe laceration to his lower left leg.

“The team treated and dressed the wound and placed the casualty in a stretcher. The casualty was then lowered down to the valley bottom and then hoisted up the final slope to a team ambulance.”

He was taken to the Patterdale MRT’s rescue centre from where an ambulance took him to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

The 890m (2,920ft) mountain lies at the end of the Swirral Edge ridge in the Helvellyn range. Keppel Cove, on the north side of the fell, has extensive disused mine workings.
