The Ramblers’ Association’s Scottish president was awarded an honorary doctorate this week.

Dennis Canavan, a former MP and MSP, received his degree at the graduation ceremony at Stirling University on Friday. Broadcaster James Naughtie, chancellor of the university, presided over the ceremony.

Mr Canavan is the second outdoors luminary to have received an honorary doctorate. Mountaineer Alan Hinkes was awarded a similar degree by the University of Teesside on the same day.

Mr Canavan was awarded his doctorate in recognition of his outstanding contribution to sport and public affairs.

He was formerly MP for West Stirlingshire, the area which includes the university. After 1983 boundary changes, he became MP for Falkirk West and then served as its MSP. He retired from the Scottish Parliament last year.

He had served as convenor of the Scottish Parliament’s sports group.

When he was appointed Ramblers Scotland president in March last year, Mr Canavan said: “Physical exercise and enjoying the outdoors has always been a key part of my life and I greatly welcome the opportunity to help the Ramblers in their efforts to promote walking for everyone, as an essential part of a healthy lifestyle.”

He succeeded journalist Cameron McNeish as president.
