Mountaineer George Band has been awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours list.

The 79-year-old was the youngest member of the1953 team that put Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on the summit of Everest. He was 23 at the time. He was also the first, along with Joe Brown, to climb Kangchenjunga, two years after the Everest expedition.

Taiwan-born Mr Band was given the award for services to mountaineering and charity. He is an appeal patron of youth development charity BSES Expeditions, formerly the British Schools Exploring Society. He lives in Hook in Hampshire. He is also chairman of the Himalayan Trust, which provides education and other facilities for Sherpas in Nepal.

Also honoured was Roy Cooksey, of Coniston Mountain Rescue Team. Dr Cooksey, of Broughton-in-Furness, received an MBE for voluntary service to the team. He was team leader and a member of the MRT for 23 years. He now lives in France.

Another recipient of the MBE was Barry Gregory, of Woodhead MRT in Yorkshire. Mr Gregory, of Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, received his gong for voluntary service to the team.

Eric Wallis also got an MBE for his service to the South West Coastal Path Association. He lives in Ermington, Devon. The association promotes England’s longest national trail, running 1,014km (630 miles) from Minehead to Poole.

Carl Lis, a former chairman of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, was awarded the OBE. Mr Lis, of Carnforth, Lancashire, was elected the authority’s planning committee chairman in September.
