A caving group is repeating its popular weekend for anyone who wants to give potholing a try.

The Yorkshire Subterranean Society is inviting would be speleologists to come along for a trip underground next month. The club, based in the Yorkshire Dales, is offering the chance to spend Saturday and Sunday with its experienced members exploring the underground glories of the Dales’ limestone passages.

The Try Caving event takes place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 March. The base for the weekend is the club’s headquarters at Helwith Bridge, a mile south of Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Handily, the Helwith Bridge pub is just a few yards away.

In November 2007, we took a trip underground with the YSS on one of their Try Caving weekends and had a great time. You can read all about it in our report.

The idea of the event it to give a taster to those of us who may have peered down the dark chasms as we pass on our trips to the fells of the Yorkshire Dales. No experience is needed, and the club will kit you out with what you need to take a trip into the dark recesses of the karst countryside in Yorkshire.

If you’re interested, you can contact the club’s Chris Tate at yorksubsoc@hotmail.co.uk. You can also visit the YSS website for further details of the club’s activities.
