A man has died after falling from a fell in the Lake District.

He is believed to have tumbled about 100m (328ft) from Pavey Ark in Great Langdale. Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team went to the man’s aid after being alerted about 2.50pm this afternoon, Wednesday. He was airlifted by a Sea King helicopter and taken to West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria Constabulary said: “Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team and the RAF Boulmer helicopter recovered the man to West Cumberland Hospital where he unfortunately died of his injuries.

“Police continue to work this morning to formally identify the man who is believed to be in his sixties and inform the next of kin. No further details will be released until this has taken place.”

In July last year, David Kelsey of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, died after falling from Jack’s Rake on Pavey Ark.

The Langdale and Ambleside team also went to the aid of a man who suffered serious head injuries yesterday, Tuesday, after falling about 100m (328ft) on the Climbers’ Traverse on Bowfell. Two members of Keswick MRT who were close to the incident tended to the man, who also sustained multiple injuries, while the Langdale team made their way to the site, at the head of Great Langdale.
He was airlifted to West Cumberland Infirmary by a helicopter from RAF Boulmer.

Langdale and Ambleside MRT issued the following advice to walkers this week: “Prolonged winter conditions experienced so far this year have been rare in recent years, however the message is the same as always: be prepared.

“Experience, appropriate equipment, and sound judgement are crucial. Ice axe, crampons, warm clothing and reliable torches are vital in current conditions. Remember as well, soft snow is exhausting to walk in, frozen snow is very slippery.”
