A man’s body has been found by mountain rescuers searching for a missing walker in the Lake District.

Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team was alerted just before 9pm last night, Wednesday, after the 60-year-old lone walker, from Windermere, failed to return from a walk in Old Dungeon Ghyll, Great Langdale. The man’s Volvo was found parked at the bottom of the fell.

The search, involving a helicopter from RAF Boulmer, Search and Rescue Dogs Association dogs and Kendal MRT was called off about 4am.

The search was resumed at 8am today by Langdale and Ambleside MRT, RAF Leeming MRT and an RAF search-and-rescue helicopter. Teams from Keswick, Wasdale, Duddon and Furness and Bowland Pennine also took part in the research, as did members of the Search and Rescue Dogs Association.

A spokeswoman for Cumbria Constabulary said a body was found about 50m (164ft) below the Climbers’ Traverse on Bowfell.

She said: “The missing man’s family has been informed. Police will now work to identify the body.

“This is not expected to be confirmed until tomorrow morning at the earliest and no further details will be released until then.

The man’s body was taken by helicopter to West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven.
