The man who died after a fall on Pavey Ark in the Lake District was an experienced climber and walker.

Brian Roberts, 60, of Saddleworth, Oldham, slipped and fell about 100m from the Langdale fell on Thursday. He was recovered by members of Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team but died in West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven.

Mr Roberts had retired from teaching at the Longdendale High School, Hyde, in Cheshire. He had climbed in the Himalaya and the Alps and was a regular rock climber.

His widow Jenny, also 60, told the Manchester Evening News: “He died doing something he had always loved.”

The Langdale and Ambleside MRT yesterday rescued a man who fell on the Climbers’ Traverse, the scene of a fatal fall on Bowfell earlier in the week.

The man suffered serious injuries when he slipped and tumbled 100m. Team members were airlifted by helicopter to the site after a fellow walker saw the accident and raised the alarm.

The mountain rescue team, along with the helicopter winchman, treated the walker at the scene and he was then flown to West Cumberland Hospital. He had injuries to his head, chest and hand.

A spokesperson said he was well equipped.
