A climber had to be airlifted to hospital today after a fall in the Lake District.

The 55-year-old man slipped and fell 120m (400ft) after completing a climb up a gully on Nethermost Cove, 1km (⅔ mile) south of Helvellyn’s summit. Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team went to the man’s aid.

He had been able to reascend to a safe position near the top of the gully but then found he could not carry on because of his injuries.

A helicopter from RAF Boulmer airlifted the climber to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.

The incident was the third in the area in two days. Yesterday, another man fell 120m in a gully near Scrubby Crag on Fairfield and a walker was taken to hospital after falling from Swirral Edge on Helvellyn.
