A stretch of England’s longest national trail remains closed, almost a week after storms caused damage along the route.

The South West Coast Path between Zennor, Morvah and Towednack was shut by an emergency order after seven bridges were washed away and stream beds widened. The section, measuring 11km (7 miles) was deemed dangerous by Cornwall County Council.

Popular sea climbing areas around Porthmeor Cove and Portheras Cove remain accessible.

The initial temporary closure lasts until 16 May, but will be extended if it has not been possible to carry out repairs in that time, according to Cornwall council. Spokesman Mike Eastwood said: “This is an extremely popular stretch of the Coast Path and we will be working with Natural England to ensure that we can reopen it for the public as soon as we can.”

Walkers attempting this section of the 1,014km (630-mile) path are being walkers advised to catch the bus between St Ives and Morvah.

The South West Coast Path runs from Minehead on the north Somerset coast, to Poole Harbour in Dorset.
