Mountain rescuers at work in the Lake District

Mountain rescuers will this week receive official thanks for their work in saving lives in the Lake District.

Cumbria’s chief constable will present commendations to each of the district’s mountain rescue teams to mark their dedication and bravery. RAF and Royal Navy teams, air ambulance and Coastguard representatives will also receive thanks for their support.

Chief Constable Craig Mackey said: “I am delighted to hold this event in recognition of the tireless work that these teams carry out on a daily basis that has, without doubt, saved countless lives.

“Each and every member gives up their spare time to assist emergency services and brave the most treacherous conditions out on our fells. Their exceptional performance is down to each member’s professionalism, goodwill and community spirit and I speak for all officers and staff when I say I am very grateful and proud to work alongside such dedicated professionals.”

Representatives from each of the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association’s constituent teams will be at the awards evening tomorrow in Ambleside.

A DVD will be shown illustrating the work the teams do which includes not only finding and treating injured people on the fells, but recover the bodies of those who die, preserve scenes and work with bereaved families. Their work often takes place in extreme conditions.

Richard Warren, chairman of the LDSMRA, said: “It is a great honour for our Lake District teams to be recognised for the work we do supporting both our local communities and the many visitors to the Lake District that we help.  Equally important is the recognition of support provided by our families and friends, without which we would struggle to make the commitment required.”
