The route between Glenridding and Helvellyn

A man was treated for hypothermia yesterday on the path to England’s third highest mountain.

Members of Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team were alerted by police to the plight of an 18-year-old man who was on a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition. The man, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, was taken to hospital after being carried from the path between Glenridding and Helvellyn.

A spokesperson for the Patterdale volunteers said: “When the rescue team reached the casualty, they found he had been placed in a bivvy tent by the rest of his party to protect him from the elements.

“Leaders of the group had also reached the scene and were organising the evacuation of other members of the group.

“The casualty was found to be semi conscious and treated for suspected hypothermia. The lad was wrapped in an insulated casualty bag and put on to a stretcher.”

He was carried by the team down off the fell to their Land Rover ambulance, taken to their rescue base in nearby Patterdale and transferred by road ambulance to hospital.

Nine Patterdale MRT members were involved in the rescue.
