A man has died and another suffered leg injuries in separate incidents on the Cuillin ridge on Skye.

The dead man was climbing with a companion when he fell yesterday. Rescuers were again called out today to help a walker who fell about 30m (100ft) on the range.

The climber died after falling near Am Basteir about 2.30pm on Monday. A spokesperson for the Northern Constabulary said: “Members of the Skye Mountain Rescue Team and the Coastguard helicopter responded to assist one of a pair of climbers who had fallen near the Am Basteir ridge in the Cuillins, Isle of Skye.

“Eighteen members of the Skye MRT were involved in the rescue. However, it was discovered that the man had sustained fatal injuries.

“Further details of the deceased are not being released.”

The Coastguard helicopter was again called in today to help 12 Skye MRT members who are tending to a walker who fell on Sgurr nan Eag.

The Northern Constabulary spokesperson said: “The man, who was walking with another man, fell approx 30m (100ft) injuring his leg, near to the summit. The pair set off from Glenbrittle this morning with the intention of walking the Cuillin ridge, Isle of Skye.

“Members of the Skye Mountain Rescue Team are currently making their way to the casualty, who is in contact with rescuers by phone. Visibility in the area is very poor and Stornoway Coastguard helicopter R100 has been contacted to assist.”
