Patterdale MRT was called out to the incident at Deepdale Hause

Two mountain rescuers were winched on to a fell to help an injured student yesterday.

The 16-year-old slipped and broke a rib while with a party at Deepdale Hause in the Lake District. The youth was with an instructor on an outdoor course at the time.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted to the incident and 15 members went to the boy’s aid. He was unable to continue due to breathing difficulties and extreme pain.

A spokesperson for the Patterdale team said: “A helicopter from HMS Gannet which was in the area and just finished assisting the Penrith team with a rescue, was tasked to assist.

“The weather made for difficult flying. However two Patterdale team members were winched down to the casualty site. The student was given pain relief and stretchered to a place were the helicopter could land.”

He was then taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle. Penrith MRT went on standby at the Patterdale base during the incident, in case they were needed.
