Volunteers have been honoured in the New Year list

Three mountain rescue team members were appointed MBEs in the New Year’s Honours List.

Gerry Akroyd, team leader of the Skye Mountain Rescue Team, David Freeborn, deputy leader of Patterdale team and Rod Stoddart of St Andrews, Fife, a member of the Search and Rescue Dogs Association were all honoured by the Queen for their voluntary service to mountain rescue.

A spokesperson for Patterdale MRT said: “Dave joined the team in 1981, becoming Team Leader in 1990 and serving almost 17 years in that role before stepping down in March 2008. He continues to serve as a deputy as well as contributing his design and media expertise to the national mountain rescue organisation.”

Martin Cotterell, who took over from Mr Freeborn as team leader, said: “Dave continues to make a huge contribution to the team – as does his wife Jacquie – and we all congratulate him on this honour. I am in awe of Dave’s energy, experience and dedication over the years and very grateful that he is now supporting me as a deputy.”

Mr Freeborn said: “I very much enjoyed my time as team leader, and I can reflect on many memories of leading a well-trained and supportive team. No team leader can do the job without total and dedicated support, humour and camaraderie from the team and I thank everyone, past and present, for their work and dedication.”

Also picking up an MBE was Derek Bartley of the Midland Association of Mountaineers who was appointed for his services to the association and to Rhyl Music Club.

Caerwyn Roberts, chair of the Snowdonia National Park Authority, was appointed an OBE, adding to the MBE he already holds, and
