Aficionados of Alfred Wainwright are casting their net wider for their annual walking challenge.

Previously, Wainwright Society members have set themselves the task of putting one of their organisation on each of the 214 fells detailed in the late author’s Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells. This year, the society is targeting the outlying fells, including the hill near Windermere that first kindled Wainwright’s love of the area.

Orrest Head is among the 122 destinations on the list for the challenge, which has been dubbed Wainwright – the Best of the Rest.

The challenge includes the 56 hills described in his Outlying Fells volume, along with those in his two volumes Walks in Limestone Country and Walks on the Howgill Fells.

The three books were produced in the 1970s by the adopted son of Kendal, whose handwritten guides have become some of the most popular walking books in Britain.

The event, which is open to Wainwright Society members, will take place between 1 May and 23 May and a minimum donation of £10 is suggested. Proceeds will go to the Fix the Fells Project, which repairs and maintains footpaths in the Lake District. Heritage Lottery funding will treble any money raised.

Fells are being allocated on a first come, first served basis. When grough checked, Orrest Head was still up for grabs. Other peaks include The Calf, the highest point in the Howgills, and Whernside, the highest peak in Yorkshire. The toughest walk, the 39km (24-mile) circuit of the Yorkshire Three Peaks, has been blagged by Wainwright Society member Chris Oades.

Details of the challenge and how to join and register are on the Wainwright Society website.
