Walkers on a Welsh coastal path can lighten their load with the launch of an innovative taxi scheme that will carry their luggage for them.

Twenty taxi firms have joined the Cab-a-Bag service that will transport rucksacks and other baggage from one overnight stay to the next along the whole of the 98km (61-mile) route in west mid-Wales. The scheme will officially launch at the Outdoor Show at the end of this month.

A yellow Cab-a-Bag logo will be carried by participants and luggage will bear special tags.

Ceredigion County Council’s rural tourism development officer, Peter Austin said: “Using the Cab-a-Bag scheme, people can actually walk the Ceredigion Coast Path from the Dyfi national nature reserve, at Ynyslas, to the Teifi Estuary at Cardigan without having to carry their rucksacks with them.

“They can travel light and enjoy the walking experience. Walkers planning to arrive by public transport can use the Cab-a-Bag facility to pre-book a transfer from their arrival point to their first accommodation provider and, from then on, use the service to pass luggage ahead.

“We know of no other similar scheme that has involved so broad a cluster of businesses coming together to offer a service that clearly complements the significant investment made in the creation of the Ceredigion Coast Path.

“It really is encouraging to witness local businesses coming together in such a constructive fashion to add value to what is already fast becoming one of the most popular coastal walks in Britain.”

The project, which is coordinated by Ceredigion County Council’s communications and tourism service, has received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013 which is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

The Ceredigion Coast Path, which will form part of the all-Wales coastal path, runs from the Teifi to the Dyfi estuaries along Cardigan Bay.
