Climbers have been warned about a loose boulder on a Lake District climbing route that could pose a danger if it is dislodged.

The rock, described as being the size of a television, threatens climbers on the Centipede route on Raven Crag in Great Langdale, and was reported by a British Mountaineering Council member who said the boulder should be removed.

BMC deputy chief executive Nick Colton said the landowner has been contacted and will send a team to inspect the site.

The member said the rock is above the third belay on the route and is in a natural position to pull up on to and then use to stand. The report continued: “When it does come away it may well take out the belayer and anyone at the foot of the crag. It needs removing I believe.”

Raven Crag stands above the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel in Langdale and consists of six buttresses of rhyolite and has 112 recognised routes ranging from Difficult to E6.
