A climber was airlifted to hospital after a fall on one of Scotland’s most popular ice routes.
Police were alerted about 12.30pm yesterday after the man fell while climbing Point Five Gully on Ben Nevis’s north face.
A spokesperson for Northern Constabulary said: “A number of Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team and RAF personnel attended. The man was located and airlifted to safety.
“The man was taken to the Belford Hospital, Fort William for treatment to his injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.”
Police said they would not be releasing the man’s details.
Point Five Gully, above the CIC Hut, is a grade V climb that attracts climbers from far and wide. Conditions at the weekend were described by one climber on UKClimbing as ‘not pleasant at all, with mushy, slushy ice’. The climber had decided to abseil off the route after the first pitch.

20 April 2010As one of the climbers in the other party on the route yesterday, I can report the conditions on the route were as good as they will get. Perfect snow ice with 1st time placements. Any suggestion that this accident occured due to the climber attempting a route in poor conditions are completly unfounded.
