Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team used its boat in the search for the man on Ullswater

Police have recovered a body from a Cumbrian lake, a week after a man went overboard from a pleasure boat.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team members were among those called in to search for a man after passengers on the Lady of the Lake steamer reported the incident, last Thursday, on Ullswater.

The team used its rescue boat to look for the man, and a major hunt along the shores of the lake took place, including police, North West Ambulance Service and the North Lakes Coastguard Rescue Team who joined 11 members of the Patterdale team in the search.

The gold-coloured Subaru of Tony Thwaites, 62, of Alcester, Warwickshire, who had been missing from his home since Wednesday, was later found nearby at Pooley Bridge.

This morning, a Cumbria Constabulary spokeswoman said: “Police searching for a man who went overboard from the Lady of the Lake steamer at Ullswater last week have recovered the body of a man.

“At around 5 o’clock yesterday evening, divers from the underwater search team located and recovered the body of a man from an area of the lake near Sharrow Bay. Police are now working to formally identify the body.

“The coroner and the family of Mr Thwaites, who had been reported missing from the Warwickshire area, have been informed.”

There were 53 passengers on board the pleasure steamer at the time of the incident.
