Rescuers have found the body of a walker who went missing on Skye.

Skye Mountain Rescue team were joined in a search by the Stornoway Coastguard helicopter after the man, in his 70s, failed to return to the Sligachan Hotel where he was staying.

The man had not been seen since leaving his hotel room on Sunday afternoon. Rescuers were joined by handlers and dogs from the Search and Rescue Dogs Association and Northern Constabulary.

A police spokesperson said: “As a result of the efforts of the search teams looking for the missing man from Sligachan, police can report that the body of a man has been recovered.

“The man was found on the west side of Sgurr nan Gillean this afternoon [Monday] following an extensive search of the area.

“Police are making every effort to identify the body and notify next of kin and until this is complete no further details will be made available.”

Sgurr nan Gillean is one of 11 munros in the Cuillin ridge, and rises to 964m (3,162 ft). The mountain overlooks Sligachan, and was the scene of a rescue in August last year when a 12-year-old boy suffered serious injuries in a fall.
