A mountain rescue team is offering visitors to its revamped website the chance to fly a rescue helicopter on missions to save stricken walkers.

But before fellwalkers get too excited by the prospect, it should be pointed out the missions are part of an online game on the newly updated site operated by the Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team.

The Rockface Rescue game tests players’ ability to winch injured walkers and the odd Highland cow into a search and rescue helicopter and comes courtesy of the BBC.

It’s part of a smart new site that also has a mountain rescue scene drawing available for download for younger hillwalkers to colour in. The website also has up-to-date sunrise and sunset times for Ambleside, one of the Lake District’s most popular walking and climbing hubs. Incident reports, safety advice, weather forecasts and a potted history appear on the site, run by one of the Lake District’s busiest rescue teams.

There is also a link to the team’s Facebook page, with almost step-by-step accounts of rescues.

The Langdale and Ambleside team is one of 12 in the Lake District.
