An RAF Sea King from Lossiemouth flew the walker to hospital

A walker died in hospital after being rescued from a hilltop in the Highlands.

John Anderson, 78, of Dundee, was found on the summit of Cairn of Barns in Glen Clova by mountain rescuers.

He died after being airlifted from the lower slopes of the 651m (2,136ft) Angus peak. Police said they suspect Mr Anderson had had a heart attack.

Mr Anderson, described by Tayside Police as an experienced walker who regularly took to the Glen Clova hills, was reported overdue by a family member about 7.30pm on Monday.

Members of the Tayside Mountain Rescue Team and the Tayside Police Mountain Rescue Team found his car near the Glen Clova Hotel and made their way to the summit of the hill, where he was discovered.

A spokesperson said: “He was unconscious and suffering from hypothermia. It is suspected Mr Anderson had suffered a heart attack.

“Low cloud prevented the search and rescue helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth from lifting him directly from where he was found. He was carried to lower levels and then airlifted to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

“Tragically Mr Anderson died in the early hours of this morning, Tuesday, June 8.

“As with all sudden deaths, a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
