Black Combe, where the body was found

A Cumbrian mountain rescue team recovered the body of a man from a fell after he was found by a walker.

Police officers and members of the Duddon and Furness MRT responded after a member of the public reported finding the body on Black Combe yesterday afternoon.

The discovery follows the disappearance of a 56-year-old Port Haverigg man Richard Hampson who was last seen on 10 June near St Mary’s Church, Whicham, on the south-western edge of the Lake District national park. Mr Hampson is known to be a frequent walker on the 600m (1,969ft) Black Combe.

Cumbria Constabulary said the body had not yet been formally identified, but the death is not being treated as suspicious. Police officers are working to identify the man and inform his family. The coroner has been informed.
