Miners Bridge, the start of the gill-scrambling section of Conistons Church Beck

Miner's Bridge, the start of the gill-scrambling section of Coniston's Church Beck

A mountain rescue team was called to a gill-scrambling site for the second time in five days after a man injured himself.

The Coniston team went to the aid of the man yesterday afternoon about 1 o’clock after he suffered ankle injuries in a fall in Church Beck near the Coppermines valley.

Members of the mountain rescue tem treated his injures before extricating him from the ravine. He was then taken to hospital by ambulance.

Last Thursday, a woman also suffered ankle injuries while gill-scrambling in Church Beck, close to the Old Man of Coniston. She too was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital.

Church Beck, between the Miner’s Bridge and the village of Coniston, is a recognised gill-scrambling venue, with a series of challenges including waterfalls, chockstones and plunge pools.
