The body of a man has been found by rescuers searching for a missing man on a Lake District fell.

The discovery was made at 9.36am by teams involved in a major search of Blencathra.

The search began yesterday evening and resumed this morning, with Keswick Mountain Rescue Team being joined by colleagues from Penrith and Kirkby Stephen and an RAF helicopter. The wife of a 51-year-old Nottingham man reported her concerns after he failed to return from a walk on the 868m (2,848ft) fell.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Constabulary said: “Sadly, MRT teams found the body of a man at 9.36am this morning during a search that began last night by Keswick Mountain Rescue Team and continued at 6am this morning.

“The body has been recovered and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. Officers will now be working to formally identify the man and inform his immediate family.”
