Nervous cyclists and those new to two wheels are being offered the chance to get out and about in a national park with a range of free events.

The Peak District National Park Authority is hosting six sessions in September and October, some women-only, to encourage cycle use in the area.

Novice riders can also brush up their bike maintenance skills, with subjects such as fixing a puncture and adjusting brakes and gears. The two-hour social cycle rides, of about 16km (10 miles) will be on quiet roads and traffic-free trails.

Cycle hire, with normal charges applied, is available at some of the Pedal Peak District events.

Organiser Carol Parsons said: “All the events have a relaxed and sociable atmosphere aimed at building beginners’ confidence. We’ve had people come along who had never ridden a bike before and they’ve learned how to ride within a few hours.

“The rides, training sessions and maintenance workshops are proving popular. People are finding that the events are a great opportunity to build their cycling confidence and learn new skills.”

Booking for the sessions is essential either by ringing 01629 816331 or e-mail the organisers,  and details can be found on the Pedal Peak District website.
