The walker was found in Ennerdale after a major seach by Cockermouth MRT

A second Lake District mountain rescue team has issued a plea to walkers to carry the right equipment as daylight hours get shorter and temperatures fall.

The reminder came after 26 members of the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team were called to search for a walker lost in the Haystacks area.

The rescuers were alerted at 8.25pm this evening and the team searched the Buttermere and Ennerdale valleys before the fellwalker was found safe and well in Ennerdale. He had no torch with him.

A spokesperson said: “Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team would like to remind the public that the nights are drawing in and the temperatures are falling.

“A torch and warm clothing are a necessity when venturing on the fells at this time of year. Embarrassment will not keep you warm!”

On Monday, the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team made a similar plea after a walker was found suffering from the cold in near-freezing temperatures neat the Knott after a night-time search involving the Patterdale team and colleagues from Langdale and Ambleside and Duddon and Furness, along with three Search and Rescue Dogs Association dogs.

Martin Cotterell, Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team leader, said following the rescue: “At this time of year, when darkness falls early, it is even more important that walkers carry the right equipment with them. This should include a torch, whistle and spare warm clothing in addition to a map and compass.”
