Climbers who returned a camming device after a material fault was found will be getting replacements this week.

Llanberis-based DMM issued a recall notice in July affecting more than 600 of its size six Dragon cams which were found to have defective aluminium in the axle boss of the device.

A statement by the company said: “The units have been modified by the previously CNC aluminium axle boss-termination being replaced by a hot forged component.”

Explaining the change, DMM technical director Fred Hall, said: “The change to a hot forging process has resolved the issue of predictability in manufacturing the axle block.

“Modified units will instantly be recognisable as the new termination is very different in appearance to the original. From a manufacturing efficiency point of view it is logical for us to do the same for sizes four and five in the future so we have a suite of components.”

The original recall only affected the size six cams, a jamming device used for protection in rockclimbing.

The size one, two and three Dragons are manufactured from 316 stainless steel and were unaffected. DMM brand manager Chris Rowlands, said: “Once again I’d like to thank all our customers and retailers who were affected by the recall for their patience and understanding.”
