A climber was airlifted to hospital after being hurt in a fall from a Yorkshire crag.

The man fell about 5m (16ft) from a route on Brimham Rocks in Nidderdale today, suffering injuries to his leg and lower back.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance was called this morning to the incident, which happened about 10.30, and 12 members of the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association aided paramedics in carrying the climber to the waiting helicopter.

Brimham Rocks, owned by the National Trust, are a climbers’ playground, with more than 600 climbing routes and a further 160 recognised bouldering routes in the gritstone formations, five miles east of Pateley Bridge. The rocks lie about 260m (853ft) above sea level, in the Nidderdale area of outstanding natural beauty.
