Photographs by an artist who specialises in capturing images of the Lake District’s wilder reaches are on show in a new exhibition in Cumbria.
Stewart Smith uses the dramatic light found at dawn and dusk to pick out the beauty of the Lakeland fells. His work is now on display at the Rheged Centre near Penrith.
The photographer searches out the high mountains of the Lakes to depict the solitude and quiet contemplation to be had away from the crowded lake shores and villages.
He said: “My work concentrates on the stunning light that can be found at dawn and dusk, and how it plays over the ridges and crags of the mountains, transforming an already remarkable scene into something almost surreally beautiful.
“The best light sometimes lasts for only a few seconds and I often wild camp in the hills in order be there to capture moments that few others get to see.
“The interpretation is of an almost primal landscape devoid of human intrusion, the mountains as they have been for thousands of years and will be for thousands more.”
The award-winning landscape photographer’s images have been published in local and national magazines, and his work has also been commissioned for and used in local and national advertising campaigns.

15 January 2011Sorry If I'm missing something obvious, but I can't find any mention of this on their website. Any ideas??
Bob
16 January 2011Absolutely right, Rhodesy, the Rheged website doesn't contain any information about the exhibition, so we'll remove that link.
Here's what Mr Smith says on his website:"My new Lake District landscape photography exhibition (with a sneaky touch of Scotland) is now up at Rheged, just on the main walkway through the shopping area.
"It’s the biggest one I’ve done so far and it’s been great to see so many of my photos printed and framed together in one place. I’ll even be adding some more in the coming weeks to fill the last exhibition space.
"The exhibition is due to run until the Easter holidays so if you’re in the area over the next few months please pop in for a browse!"

16 January 2011Thanks for the response Bob. Just want to say it wasn't a criticism of the report if it sounded like that - you'd think they'd want to publicize events like this, and everything else going on at Rheged, but the website certainly doesn't do this.
Thanks for briging my attention to the photographer's website - the exhibition sounds pretty good, I might try and see it if I'm up that way any time soon.

16 January 2011Correct me if I'm wrong but shouldn't that be The Scafells and Wasdale from Great Gable.
Bob
16 January 2011Think you're right AW. Caption corrected
