A climbing gear manufacturer says a special team will be working through the weekend to deal with recalls of a popular camming device.

Llanberis-based DMM issued a recall notice on Wednesday after reports of cracks on two of its Dragon Cams on sale in the USA.

The defects mean climbers should stop using the size five Dragons immediately and return them direct to the company or their retailer or distributer.

The problems only affect Dragon Cams with a turned boss, similar to size six ones that were the subject of a recall in July last year. Cams with a hot-forged boss are not affected.

The company is also recalling size four Dragons with the turned boss.

A statement said: “For the safety of all of our customers we are issuing an immediate recall for all Dragon Cams size four and five with turned axle bosses. At present there is no evidence that suggests the size four Dragon Cams are affected. However, we feel it appropriate to include them in the recall due to similarities in construction.”

Climbers who return their Dragons will have them reassembled with a new hot forged aluminium axle boss and returned to them. Retailers are being asked to quarantine their affected stock and return them.

In a further statement, DMM said: “Firstly we would like to thank all our customers, distributors, retailers and end-users alike for their very positive response to the situation. We are indebted to the quick and responsible actions of everybody who has helped so far.

“A dedicated team has been assigned to deal with the problem. We have also prioritised the manufacture of all replacement components in our factory.

“The team will be working throughout the weekend to give us a good head start next week when we will start processing the returned units.

“With these measures in place, we feel confident that this will greatly speed up the turnaround time and ensure that climbers are without their cams for the shortest possible time.”

Full details of the affected cams, and a form for returns, are on the DMM website.
